Readings Notes

The Old Testament readings this week describe the division of the Kingdom under Rehoboam (chs. 10-12), and the reigns of Abijah (13:1-14:1) and Asa (chs. 15-16).  In comparison with the parallel account in Kings, the treatment of Rehoboam specifically is longer in 2 Chronicles; in 1 Kings, much of the account is focused on Jeroboam and the creation of the Northern Kingdom of Israel.  Second Chronicles gives more details of Rehoboam’s wickedness.  In 1 Kings, the account of Abijah is terse and the summary of his reign was negative; in 2 Chronicles, the Chronicler positively highlights Abijah’s faithfulness in standing against Jeroboam.  As for Asa’s reign, the Chronicler gives a fuller account, noting how in much of it Asa was faithful until late when he began to be unfaithful.

The New Testament readings continue through Paul’s letter to the Corinthians and the Psalms cover Psalms 61-66.
